The picturesque community of Agrilia is a Zante destination offering seclusion and quietude. Lots of fun awaits at the popular resort of Laganas, only 2,5km away and the more peaceful Kalamaki beach can be reached at 3,5km. The village and beach resort of Laganas is full of bars, cafes and eateries, as well as stores like souvenir shops and supermarkets. A bit further, Venetian-inspired Zante town will give your holidays a whole different meaning, which we recommend you visit at least once during our stay.
The newly built Villa Eleon is in a great location, creating a true feeling of calm, isolation and peace, yet with delightful beaches, bars and more just five minutes away of the peaceful area called Agrilia. This modern villa is within close distance from the famous resort of Kalamaki, a small village built along the beach. Kalamaki area is actually the natural extension of the area of Laganas. The beach at Kalamaki has a very fine sand and crystal-clear waters. The sandy beach is also a reproduction place for the famous Caretta sea turtle.
Kalamaki, owing to this great beach, is a magnet to many tourists during the summer and one of the main resorts of the island. Pedalo and boat hire are readily available, and you may even be able to catch a glimpse of the protected Caretta- Caretta Turtles which nest on the beach! You'll also be in a great position for exploring the island!
You will find a very comprehensive market at Kalamaki. There are money exchange agencies, bakeries, gift-shops, jeweleries and leatherwear shops. The gift shops offer the perfect gifts to take back home, like jewelery, leatherwear, handbags, miniature Caretta - Caretta turtles, pottery and sweets made from honey and almonds, like mandolato and pasteli.
You will find many excellent restaurants and taverns at Kalamaki, offering menus from the traditional Greek cuisine, but also from the English, Chinese, and Italian ones. Even if you like fast-food, you won´t miss it! Furthermore, some of the restaurants and the taverns offer live Greek music shows with traditional singing and dancing. There are, also, several relaxed cocktail bars across the main street and at the side roads.
Kalamaki forms a natural extension of Laganas beach, with perfect, golden sand and clean waters. You may rent umbrellas and sunbeds to use at the beach, and there are taverns and restaurants close to the beach. Most of the people prefer the middle of the beach, but if you walk a little, you may discover great, quiet spots. Remember, the sandy beach at Kalamaki is also the reproduction place of the famous Caretta- Caretta sea turtle. The reproduction season coincides with the vacation season. During July and August, the female turtles come ashore to bury their eggs about 50 cm in the sand. The warm sand causes the eggs to hatch and the baby turtles emerge 8 weeks later, immediately heading to the moonlit sea. So, if you want to spend some time at the beach, you must be careful not to disturb the nests with your umbrella or by digging, also you must not touch the emerging baby turtles. Power water sports are not allowed in the area and no one is permitted at the beach after sunset.
There are boats with glass bottoms, from which you may watch the turtles in their natural environment. There are also small boats that take tourists to remote beaches. Take the opportunity to visit Marathonissi island, where the beach is also a reproduction area of the Caretta- Caretta turtle.
There are plenty of fun family activities and attractions within a short drive. Kalamaki and Laganas both have mini golf facilities. The Caretta Fun Park in Kalamaki is also great for smaller children. Sarakinado Water Village in Zante is sure to be a hit with children of all ages, or venture 30 minutes' drive south to St. Nick's Beach which has jet skis, parasailing, ringos and banana boats!
Kalamaki is only 5 kilometers from the island capital, Zante Town, which is well worth seeing during your stay. The town has a wealth of shops and places to eat around the square and lining the harbor, or venture up the hill to the remains of the Venetian castle at Bocchali and enjoy the fantastic views over the east coast. Further north, around an hour's drive from Villa Eleon, is the beautiful little village of Volimes, which has various craft and gift shops to browse. And no trip to Zante would be complete without visiting the famous Shipwreck Beach. The beach is only accessible by boat but there is a viewing platform overlooking the beach and wreck at the top of the cliff - don't forget your camera!
